Now that you've landed your dream job in communication consulting Austin, you are ready to do your homework about the area so that you can scope out where you want to live. Austin is the capital of Texas and the second-largest capital city in the country. The Colorado River runs through the city, making it a very desirable place to live.

The residential areas surrounding Zilker Metropolitan Park are convenient for Highway 1 and for the Colorado River. The 350-acre park bears the name of the man who signed over the title to the land in 1917, Andrew Jackson Zilker. Among the attractions in the park are the Zilker polo field, Umlauf Sculpture Garden and a nature center.

Auditorium Shores is a public park located right on the river near Lady Bird Lake at South First Street. It is a pleasant and popular neighborhood and forms the site of the yearly South by Southwest festival (SXSW). This annual event, which has been going on since 1987, can go on for as long as ten days and consists of films, music and other entertainment. Another welcome amenity in Auditorium Shores is a leash-free dog park, where dogs can frolic with other dogs and humans can mingle with other humans.

Apartments in Auditorium Shores connect with Highway 1 via Barton Springs Road. This area is handy for crossing the river into northeast Austin with bridges on Lamar Boulevard, First Street and Congress Avenue. The Lady Bird Lake Trail offers a footbridge for pedestrians.

Another desirable neighborhood is west of I-35 (Interregional Highway 290) and north of the Colorado. The area encompasses the State Capitol building and a nearby middle school. Pleasant Valley, Montopolis Park and the Riverside Golf Course are located south of the river and west of State Hwy 183.

There are less densely populated areas, for instance, near where the river forms a ninety degree bend and runs north and south. One such are is Tarrytown, near the MoPac Expressway. In this neighborhood, residents enjoy the benefits of Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve and an elementary school. MoPac Expressway, also referred to as Loop 1, is a freeway named after the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

Georgetown, the red poppy capital of Texas, lies approximately 30 miles north of Austin about half an hour's drive up Interstate 35. Georgetown is nowhere near the Colorado River but it does have less than half the population density of the state capital. Films shot either entirely or partly within Georgetown include "Michael, " released in 1996 and starring John Travolta, "Varsity Blues, " and "Where the Heart Is."

With a median age of local residents being 30, the capital of Texas is a vibrant place for someone in communication consulting Austin to live. Close to the city center are good transport links and the beauty of the Colorado River. Not far away, the suburbs offer a more quiet way of life.
