Importance Of Safe Prisoner Partition

By Dominique Martin

The aim of taking wrong doers to prison is for correctional purposes away from the public until their jail term is over. No one likes to be locked away, whether it is just for one month or lifetime term, that is why many prisoners try to break out if their prisoner partition is not strong and safe to hold them. The safety of partitions during transportation of prisoners ensures that there will be no easy way for escape.

Even the most peaceful and calmest person develops irrational behavior when held in a confined place and that is why prisoners think of escaping and becoming fugitives instead of waiting for their term to be over and become free citizens again. Escape is not the only challenge in prisons; fatal fights and suicides happen within the cells as well. Most of the weapons used to carry out these in-prison crimes are improvised from within the prison.

Suicides in the prisons can be avoided if the partition is taken through quality checks to ensure whatever is inside it, a suicidal prisoner can't use to commit suicide. Any sharp object that can be used to cut arms as a way of suicide or any other way that it can be done should totally be avoided in the making of the partitions. Safe partitions can be costly, but it is way expensive to let a life be lost.

Chaos can at any time occur in the prison facility and it would be extremely hard for the few prison officers available to control angry mob of prisoners with history of crimes. This makes it vital for partitions to have capability of being auto locked. It also makes work easier and reduces labor costs within the facility if the doors can be opened and locked automatically.

The age old way of escaping from prisons is still in use. Prisoners do this by digging through the prison walls to find their way out. This is only possible if the materials used to make the walls are not strong enough or have structural flaws. Partitions should be tested for any flaws and strength before they start being used by prisoners.

Self contained partitions are best for prisons where different enemy groups' prisoners are held to ensure that the prisoners will not be meeting at the common washrooms, since they have a washroom in the partition. This reduces chances of fights. It also makes it possible to isolate violent prisoners or isolate sick prisoners in the case of disease outbreak.

It is a common practice for inter-prison transfer of prisoners to happen on daily basis. This is the time prisoners take the opportunity to escape from their transport partitions. There are 309 on average escapes per year with 68% of these happenings during transportation. The reason of this high figure is the way some partitions used in the transport vehicles are made, which make it easy for prisoners to escape.

The police and prison officers involved in handling prisoners are giving a good service to the society. This job can be stressing since they are dealing with criminals who can turn against them and maim them. It is the responsibility of the government to make sure there are safe prison partitions in place to make it easy for the officers.
