Trailer Graphics & The Idea Of Minimalism

By Bob Oliver

Over the past couple of years, brands have seemingly gone with a "less-is-more" approach with their branding. Specifically, any kind of intricate design or aesthetic they might have been associated with have been downplayed in order to appear simpler. This is an idea that can be attributed to more minimalist efforts, which shows few signs of going away anytime soon. In fact, I'd like to think that this could be applied to the creation of trailer graphics as well.

Minimalism, in its base form, is designed for the purpose of driving attention to a specific message. With many design efforts, this can come across as something of a challenge, especially when you consider that too many visuals at once can leave the aforementioned message coming across as rather disjointed. To put it simply, trailer graphics have to direct peoples' attention to a specific message. Fortunately, this can be done through the efforts of various companies, JMR Graphics included.

Minimalism, from what I have seen, is useful in that it can draw attention to logos. This is especially positive for companies that might have gone about redesigns, in this regard, and would like to draw good attention to the logos themselves. Fortunately, minimalist trailer wraps can go about this rather effectively since few other visuals are utilized for this purpose. Branding is crucial, to say the least, and the focus shown on cleaner logos can help this process along.

Of course, one can argue that this can detract your message if it's done poorly. Minimalism does not make use of many visuals, which can be seen as something of a negative for those who pride themselves on being designers. When they have very little to work with, how exactly are they supposed to help clients in the long run? Minimalism has its own approach and only with experience will this method be perfected by the best designers.

To say that companies have accepted the usage of minimalism, in their advertising campaigns, would be nothing short of an understatement. It seems like they have taken notice of the fact that businesses are more streamlined, in terms of visuals, which is probably for the best. A positive note to make is that these visuals can be brought into the creation of trailer wraps. As a result, their appearances can appear simpler and, by proxy, be easier for the human mind to digest.
