On October first, 1949, the present Chinese banner was initially raised in the Tiananmen Square on the event of the foundation of the People's Republic of China. On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong raised the new flag over Tian'anmen Square. At three o'clock in the afternoon, with 300,000 people watching, Mao Zedong pressed the button on the flag pole, and the red flag with its five stars ascended over Beijing for the first time. The rectangular flag has a red field with five splendid yellow stars in the upper left corner. The star on the left is greater than the other four. The red shade of the flag symbolizes revolution.

The four smaller stars also represent the four social classes of the traditional Chinese society - the working class, the peasantry, the urban petty bourgeoisie, and the national bourgeoisie (capitalists) - united under the Communist Party of China. Five 5-pointed stars reflects the importance of the number five in Chinese philosophy (The number 5 is associated with the five elements - Water, Fire, Earth, Wood, and Metal - and hence, it was historically associated with the Emperor of China).

The inventor of Chinese National flag is Zeng Liansong (1917-1999) he was an economist in Shanghai and was a member of the CPPCC Shanghai group. He joined the Liberation War against Japan when he was young. The design went through several changes and was finally approved by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on September 27, 1949, at their First Plenary Session. The original design plans contained several alterations in comparison with the modern-day flag.
