How Social Media Could Affect Your Email Marketing Effectiveness

By Amanda Hightower

As part of a promotional strategy, email marketing is absolutely crucial. Done effectively it can help increase sales, profits and improve the value of a firm. By learning how to use social media, you can add to that campaign and hopefully improve upon it. The important thing to remember to do first is market mailing templates, so you can build brand identity.

Branding is something that can be done quarterly or yearly. What is key is to make your brand consistent. Make sure all mailings have consistent logos and that they include social icons that will take a prospect to your webpage if clicked.

It's imperative to check all the links in a mail shot to see if they are working. Most firms these days include social share icons in their emails. These are simply buttons for the most popular social network outlets that allow the recipients of the email to share it with their social networks. It ignites discussion about your service or product and therefor generates publicity.

Websites are excellent tools for building up a presence and developing a mailing list. Having a blog seems to be pretty essential these days but there are a few rules that must be followed. It cannot be geared towards selling, at least not overtly, and should be updated regularly. The main task of the site is to act as a funnel by filtering prospects through the sales process.

One of the advantages of blogging is that it's a great way to communicate directly with customers. They'll often post comments so long as the content of the blog is relevant to their needs. It can also be a good way of getting people to sign up for your newsletter. By putting sign up boxes in your blog you'll draw attention to the fact that you actually have a newsletter.

The idea is to try and encourage as many people as possible to sign up and receive updates and alerts. A way of doing this through social media is to use things like Facebook as a tool for getting subscribers. A tab that encourages people to subscribe can easily be put on your Facebook page. Check your mail marketing platform, as they might have tools to help with this. Make the application is visible to the potential customer and easily accessible from the main page.

Many social media outlets allow for using newsletter pages and linking to them. LinkedIn allow the user to place links of their pages that when clicked will lead to your sign-up page. Subscription forms are usually available from most social networking sites so you should be able to post links to your signup page from these.

One of the more effective ways to use email marketing is to give something away as an incentive. The tactic of providing something for free or at a huge discount is old but has been proven to work. The way to do it is to promise those that sign up a free gift or maybe even some sort of discount on your product or service.
