How To Carry Out A Construction Site Preparation

By Lela Perkins

The first step in every construction project is preparing the ground, which is carried out immediately the property developer or property owner obtains building consent from the local authorities. Unknown to most people is that Construction site preparation involves more than just clearing the area to ensure that a building project is fully compliant with safety, environmental and health guidelines. The process of preparing a building ground is highlighted here.

One of the first steps in making the ground ready for possible development is to establish the exact area boundaries and erect a perimeter fence. The surest way of knowing where the boundaries are is by using an architect area plan or drawing. Once a perimeter fence is in place, it is important that a placard is set up that shows the persons overseeing construction, where and how they can be contacted if need be. Failure to provide such details will mean that in case of emergency situations such as break in and accidents during after-hours, the concerned parties will not be informed in good time, which delays actions.

The next thing to do is to identify where best to place safety signs onto and inside the fence. Some of the signs pinned onto the fence include Construction Work In Progress, No Unauthorized Entry into the area, No Hawking etc. Some of the safety signs you can place inside includes No Safety Gear, No Job, No Smoking, Fire Exit Points Here etc.,

The next thing you need to do when readying the ground is to carry out soil tests to ensure the soil is not contaminated. In addition, search the area for any concealed risks such as hidden cable systems, unused drainage systems and open excavation shafts. If you find any of these risks, deal with them accordingly. These are the most important aspects in your preparation.

The next step is probably what most people are familiar with, which is clearing the ground of all scrubs and old buildings/ facilities. This is often easier said than done. This step involves moving all the local wildlife to another safe zone such as animal sanctuaries available in the locality. In addition, hiring an exterminator to deal with rodents that pose serious health issues.

Facilities such as office, toilets, changing rooms and eatery are then set up to make the place operational and livable for the workers. In addition, the ground needs to be linked with water and energy supply to be used before, during and after the development phase.

Communication plays a crucial role in facilitating a successful project. As a result, you need to install an effective communication system as a way of preparing the area for possible development. This includes linking the area with a telephone line and internet access, which will be useful in giving out instructions to relevant parties, facilitating contracts and communicating with various stakeholders including suppliers, specialist including architect, electricians and engineers etc.

Construction site preparation is not complete without facilitating operational efficiency and security of the ground. This can be achieved by allocating spaces for various tasks including loading and storage areas and installing safety locks and CCTV cameras respectively.
