Knowing When You Need High Rise Window Cleaners

By Stella Gay

You have a tall building with a lot of window glass. The biggest problem you have is getting all of the glass cleaned on a regular basis. It needs to be cleaned because the wind and rain will bring much contamination to the surface and the glass can become filthy and you and your employees ability to see out is diminished. Depending on the height of your structure, you may need to hire a company who has high rise window cleaners.

You have seen window jockeys working on the glass on many first floor or low buildings. They will clean the windows with a few tools, along with a pole. Many of them will use a self contained water supply, often with deionized water to eliminate chemicals being introduced. The occasional need for a scissor lift, for some glass, is common, especially if there is a flat surface to operate on.

Floors above the third can be cleaned by using a boom truck. This is a machine that has large tires and can get into position to lift a cleaner up higher than a pole or a scissor lift can. Anything higher than what can be reached by these pieces of equipment are termed high rise and need specialized training and some fairly complicated rigging.

Most of these high rise buildings already have the systems they need, installed on the roof. The various anchors that cleaners use are set up for whoever will be doing the cleaning. One of those systems is the fairly unpopular, yet fairly simple, system of repelling down the building, cleaning as they go.

The rope that is used to allow for this repelling system to work is anchored to the roof. There are a set of block and tackle, which consists of a couple of pulleys that allow those ropes to be pulled up and down. There is a duplicate set attached to a flexible chair that the cleaner sits in. This chair is fabricated from ropes and hold the technician very securely. The pulleys that are at this level will allow the cleaner to move from one floor to the next and lock him in place when desired.

A gondola system is popular and run by a similar system, on the roof, however, it is aided by an electric motor that does the lifting and lowering. This platform is manned by more than one person, usually, and can be lowered to the appropriate position and locked into place. The cleaning can be done and then the whole platform will be lowered to the next floor down.

Regardless of the lifting or lowering equipment used, the cleaners will accomplish the actual work in the same way as they do on the ground level. There are just a few tools that need to be used and a soap solution that is usually dish washing soap and water. Those tools are a wet bar, bucket, a squeegee, window knife and a clean cloth or two.

The cleaning begins with getting the glass wet, using the wet bar. The window is then scrapped, if needed, with the knife. The next step is the show a lot of people like to watch. This squeegee is used in many different ways, some them starting at the top and coming straight down and others swirling back and forth across the surface, ending at the bottom.
