Fire Retardant Spray Can Literally Save Your Life

By Krystal Branch

Stuntmen and women need to be familiar with all different manner of stunts and the safety methods that they need to use to maintain a healthy and accident free work environment. Often they will use things like fire retardant spray or protective headgear and clothing to ensure that they stay injury free. The job can be fun and exciting but also needs to be contrasted with the fact that it is often dangerous.

Fire is a reaction, of which the flame is the visible portion. Depending on what material is burning and how hot the flame is, the flames can be many different colors. As a general rule, red flames are the coolest and the white flames are the hottest. There are different colors in between and different materials burn with different colored flames that can be blue, green and purple.

Direct combustion isn't the only way that flames can damage things. The resulting heat from a flame can be just as damaging to some materials. If a flame is raging outside of a "fireproof" safe, for example, the contents of the safe may be exposed to exceedingly high heat. This heat can melt and warp some materials and even destroy documents without forcing them to ignite.

Safety gear is essential for a stuntman to do their job. There are all different kinds of equipment for all different kinds of stunts. It is different for just about every different job and the deciding factor is the circumstances in which the stunt happens. More often than not, in order to promote a realistic feel, the stuntman must hide the safety gear or at least minimize its visibility.

The safety gear can be anything from harnesses to flame proof clothing. It the actor is supposed to fall from a building and the shot needs to show them in mid-air, harnesses must be used in order for the stunt double to appear as if they are actually falling. If the stunt double needs to be on fire, they can't very well use ordinary clothing in order to get the shot.

Doing stunt work can be very fun and exciting. It is constantly about adapting to new problems and overcoming obstacles. The challenge can be figuring out effective ways to do things so that they look realistic on film. It isn't the easiest industry to break into though and there are some things that make it easier. Having experience in some way, shape or form will help immensely.

The fact that it is an enjoyable and exciting job doesn't mean that it comes with no downsides though. The work is often very dangerous and not for the faint of heart or the underinsured. On the chance that an accident does occur and you have an injury to take care of, it can get very expensive. Most productions that use stunt people require the proper insurance to be in place.

Fire retardant spray can stop flames from spreading but it will never stop flames from being used. Historically it has been both advantageous and cruel. It's uses range from cooking and controlling agriculture to execution and torture. For millennia people have been using flames for all different sorts of purposes. It is beautiful and deadly, much like the species that controls it.
