The Significance Of OOH Advertising

By Ina Hunt

Advertisements can reach consumers when they are out of their homes. This known as out of home advertising, also called OOH advertising. The main aim of this type of promotion is to reach consumers who are on the move, out in public places and in social and commercial surroundings such as malls. It has four main categories: billboards, street furniture, transit, and alternative.

For a long time, billboard use has grown significantly as a format in the outside publicity category. Although it is still quite popular, digital displays have been constructed and they too are becoming common. Still, billboards remain as one of the most thriving forms of outside marketing, being responsible for quite a sizeble amount of the out of home market for advertisement. Because of their popularity, they generate huge revenues.

Street furniture advertisement is another form of out of home publicity. It is common mostly in urban centers. It is most visible in newspaper stands, bicycle shelters, bus shelters, retail outlets as well as malls. They are placed in close proximity to pedestrians and shoppers to make more visible for eye-view. This form is beneficial to the community since it provides them with amenities such as bus shelters. Also, the building and maintenance of these amenities is not the responsibility of the community but rather that of street furniture companies.

Transit advertising is whereby advertisements are basically put on the move. They are placed on anything which is moving, such as trucks, taxis, buses and even subway marketing. It also includes fixed static advertising at bus and train stations. Airport advertisement, which businesses use to address travelling audiences, is also part of this category. This type of marketing is often accepted by municipalities as it is a source of revenue to city authorities.

Alternative promotion includes advertisements in stadiums, rest areas, bicycle racks, lunch trucks, on gas pump sand other non-traditional formats. This form of advertising provides businesses with the opportunity to address consumers in places where they do not expect.

Collectively, transit, street furniture and alternative media formats account for a substantial amount of total outdoor revenue. In fact, some of these formats command a higher percentage of advertisements than traditional billboards. Some forms, like lunch truck advertising is placed on industrial lunch trucks which then serve the general population during break, lunch and dinner. These trucks offer four billboard styles, samples and out of hand material.

A host of operators, located in different locations around the world, make up the outdoor promotion industry. Collectively, they represent all the major forms of outdoor promotion. They range from small, independent, family-owned companies to large publicly traded companies and multimedia corporations.

Since it can get the message to customers with ease from almost any location away from their homes, out of home publicity has grown to become the most preferred medium by most advertisers. Brand s in real estate, retail, food services, finance and telecommunication heavily rely on this medium. Its capability to engage moving customers and influence their purchase appeals to them. Also, other people also get to gain from out of home product promotion.
