Lenses that contain wooden, metallic, plastic, ceramic or frames made from other materials for placement on the eyes are called eye glasses, spectacles, or just glasses. They are worn by different people for different personal reasons. Today, they incorporate several features that allow them to do more than one function. In San Antonio eye glasses are manufactured by people with years of experience and great expertise in eye care. As such, products are of good quality too.

The use for which these articles are meant is used to categorize them. Main categories are safety, 3D, corrective, sunglasses, and fashion articles. Refractive errors in individuals suffering from vision impairment use corrective lenses to correct the defects. The products eliminate effects caused by eye conditions such as myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. This is achieved through bending light rays that pass through the glass. Optometrists or ophthalmologists make the prescriptions for all designs of glasses. Lensmeter is the device used in verification of the accuracy of prescriptions.

Safety glasses are solely for protecting the eyes against flying debris. Shatter resistant plastic is used to make the lens. They provide safety against both liquid and solid substances in various working conditions. Sometimes welding helmets may be inconvenient or uncomfortable hence special types of goggles are used to protect eyes. Such goggles have dark lenses. Athletes use nylon-framed products in training and competitions due to their lightweight and flexibility.

Bright light and UV radiation can be harmful to eyes hence wearing sunglasses is sometimes necessary. Such products incorporate lenses that are photosensitive. Their color changes from clear to dark in bright UV light. This way, the lens is able to block off excess light from passing through it to the eyes. Horizontally polarized beams are also removed by modern products because they have light polarization capability.

In the current world many people wear these products for fashion purposes while others do so as a way of hiding their eyes. There are many famous people and celebrities who wear eyeglasses to distinguish themselves from movie characters they play or for identity. Blind people also put on glasses that are near opaque for cosmetic reasons.

For many years lenses were made from glass, but today manufacturers are shifting to high-tech plastics. High-tech plastics offer more benefits compared to glass hence the reason for the shift. Manufacturers prefer plastics because they are more scratch-resistant, thinner, lighter, durable, hard to break, and have the ability to be treated. As such, lenses are now placed into various groups such as trivex, polarized, photochromic, aspheric, polycarbonate, and high index plastic.

Various applications are served well by different lens categories. For example, polycarbonate lens works well for kids and athletes because it is impact-resistant. Trivex lens has lighter, thinner, and better vision correction capability even though it has same properties as polycarbonate lens. The high-tech plastic in trivex lens is comparatively newer also.

High index plastic lens is designed to suit strong prescriptions. Their curvatures are made of differing degrees. The nature of curvature distinguishes it from traditional lenses which are normally spherical. Usable surface in aspheric lens is larger because of the nature and shape of the surface.
